James and Bernadine Mullhall diversified away from traditional farming to establish their B&B, leisure centre and self-catering accommodation in Co. Carlow. Coolanowle House & Leisure Centre is a unique haven of tranquillity, combined with a myriad of country pleasures. The Mullhall’s have something for everyone, the leisure centre is a fully equipped gym and after a rigorous workout you can relax and rejuvenate in the health spa, sauna and steam rooms. The self catering apartments are restored farm buildings, they cater for families of all sizes who may wish to have their “ own space” without the hassle of staying in a B&B. Coolanowle House is set on 3 acres of rambling parkland featuring beautiful beech and wood gardens with 18th century flax ponds. Other outside activities can be organised by the Mullhalls, which include golf, equestrian, fishing or walking trails. Coolanowle House received Leader funding from Laois Leader to make the venture possible, Coolanolwe is also recognised by the Irish Tourist Board and is a runner up in the farmhouse awards.
Coolanowle has shown it can expand and grown with the changing times by providing consumers with extras such as the leisure facilities and many other activities The Mullhall farm is a 100-acre organic farm, it is also a demonstration farm for the Irish Organic Farmers and Growers Association of Ireland. Dairying is the main enterprise with 55 milking cows, which supplies a local dairy which produces organic yoghurt
Beef & lamb is also produced and sold to restaurants, butchers and to the general public. James Mullhall sells organic beef & lamb at local farmers markets throughout the country. James views the farmers markets “ as a great opportunity to deal directly with consumers, the positive feedback is great encouragement in comparison to selling farm produce to factories”. James also sells beef and lamb deep freeze boxes directly to consumers; the boxes contain a selection of different cuts.
